Photographer Danny La hails from Salt Lake City, Utah, where he has worked as a professional photographer for over a decade. He is a freelance photojournalist with 10 years of experience at The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah’s largest daily newspaper and one of the most widely-circulated publications in the Intermountain West. During his tenure as a news photographer, Danny has captured images from several events attracting international attention, such as the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and the annual Sundance Film Festival in Park City. He has also shot from the sidelines of hundreds of Utah college sports competitions, World Cup events, and Utah Jazz basketball games. Photography has led Danny all over the country — including to Native American reservations, Hurricane Katrina disaster areas, and several national parks — as he has collaborated with reporters to tell compelling stories about everything from unexpected tornadoes to the inner workings of a religious capital.
In 2006, Danny was the first place winner of the Society of Professional Journalists spot news competition, earning the prize with a photo of grieving Gold Star mother. In 2005, he won two first place awards in the Society of Professional Journalists and “Best of the West” photography competitions for an image of troops returning home from Iraq. His many accolades also include first place honors from the Utah-Idaho-Spokane Associated Press Association in 2004 for his sports photography.
In addition to photojournalism, Danny enjoys freelance photography and is currently working on several fine art photo projects. Projects have taken Danny several times to Asia — to Vietnam, Taiwan and China –as well as to Western Europe and Mexico. In 2006, he was one of few Western photographers to shoot the world-famous Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival in Harbin, China, located in the country’s northernmost region. Artistic images by Danny are available for online purchase on this site.
Danny also enjoys shooting portraiture and special occasions. He draws upon his journalistic instincts to cover personal occasions like high-profile news events. Galleries of Danny’s special occasion photography and individual portraiture are available for viewing on this site.
Danny’s work has appeared in Newsweek, The Chicago Tribune, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Sports Illustrated. He is married and has two children.
